Children of Blood and Bone

For once, when somebody (myself) says "I might try reading this book in the future", it actually happened. I read a blog review by Deven earlier this year and over winter break read that same book. This is my review of Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi.

 Plot

Zelie Adebola is a maji, a person who can harness magic. When she was young, she remembers the days that magic ran wild, where all maji were free to use their powers. This all changed when one night when the evil king Saran interrupted the connection between the maji and the Sky Mother. He took this chance to murder all adult maji.
Flash back to the present day and Zelie and her family are struggling to survive. The maji tax is especially harsh, rising ever month and forcing them to live off of scraps. When Zelie learns that there is a chance for magic to return, she takes it and sets on a wild adventure across Orïsha to bring it back.

This book is written excellently. You constantly feel connected with the characters, seeing their pain and rooting for them. This book lets one's imagination roam free, and while it has similar features to many books in the fantasy genre, it manages to stand out and still be captivating. Finally, it does have a decent amount of romance which seems to affect the plot slightly, but it is not too overbearing.

Overall, my high expectations for this book (credit to deven's review) were blown away by the great writing. I would recommend this book to any and all people who enjoy fantasy, and/or slightly romantic books.

  1. Great review, Joseph! I saw the cover of this blog post and thought to myself where I had seen it before, eventually recognizing from Deven's earlier blog post. The components and genre that you've described about this book have intrigued me, and the fact that two people have enjoyed it so far is also a good sign. "I might try reading this book in the future"!

  2. Nice Review! I can see that you thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I believe that I will too. I often have trouble feeling the emotions of characters in fiction books, but I would like to give this a try because that was a part of your review.
