Cemetery Boys By Aiden Thomas
For my first book this year, I decided to read Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas. While I chose it at random, I was not disappointed. This article will cover a general plot of the book (with no spoilers), and later will talk about my thoughts on the book.
Plot
Cemetery boys tells the story of Yadriel, a gay and transgender Brujo who only wishes to be accepted into his magical family. The women in his family (brujas) are healers, and the men (brujos) are spirit guides who send spirits to the afterlife, but Yadriel is not allowed to be either because of his gender.
In an attempt to prove himself to his family, he attempts to summon Manuel, his recently deceased cousin. Instead, he ends up summoning the ghost of a school bully, Julian. Together, with the help of Yadriel's cousin Maritza, the three set out to investigate the mysterious deaths of Julian and Manuel.
Thoughts
This book is masterfully written. You constantly feel connected with the characters, suffering their pain and celebrating their joys. What this book also does well is tackle important issues such as Transphobia and Homophobia. There are many strong LGBTQ+ characters in this book, and it makes sure to prove that they are not lesser because of their gender or sexuality. Finally, it does have a small amount of romance, but it makes sure to keep it slow and quiet, building up to the end of the book.

Overall, I had no expectations coming into this book, but was blown away by the great writing. I would recommend this book to any and all people who enjoy fiction, and/or slightly romantic books.

ReplyDeleteGreat review. I liked how you gave the book a go and you liked it just from picking it at random. You gave a good intro to the book that makes you want to read it because you made it sound so interesting . I liked how you gave your own thoughts about the book and took the idea of making a review not just about the book and shifted part of the article to your thoughts.
